WSIS event cluster – Geneva – May 2008

World Summit on the Information SocietyThe World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is a joint effort of the ITU and the United Nations. Two meetings were held – Geneva 2003 and Tunis 2005 – that gave arise to a Declaration of Principles , a Plan of Action, then a Commitment and an Agenda. The two Internet Governance Forums (IGF), in Athens 2006 and Rio 2007, were a direct result. A 3rd IGF will be held in Hyderabad, India, in Dec 2008. Before that, however, a cluster of WSIS-related events will take place in Geneva from 12-29 may 2008. Continue reading

What will come of the next decade on the Internet? We often take for granted the state of the net today, but there’s no guarantee that it will remain this way. Will the digital future be dystopian, or is there a brighter outlook ahead than some may believe? Our panelists — thinkers and net visionaries — will provide their perspectives on the future of the net, with backgrounds ranging from art, law, technology, politics, media, culture, and entrepreneurship. We will tap in to each speaker’s knowledge to provide a unique vision of the digital future, and will engage with members of the audience to further the exploration of what lies ahead. The event, which is in the form of a discussion, is presented by the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School, Jeffrey Cunard and Bruce Keller, partners at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, & Big Think. Susan Crawford, Visiting Professor at Yale Law School, will join the discussion. Yale University Press are the publishers of the book.

Today is Document Freedom Day

ODF logo26 March 2008: Today is the world’s first Document Freedom Day. The Document Freedom Day (DFD) is a global day for Document Liberation. Roughly 200 teams from more than 60 countries worldwide are organising local activities to raise awareness for Document Freedom and Open Standards. The DFD was initiated and is supported by a group of organisations and companies, including, but not limited to the Free Software Foundation Europe, ODF Alliance, OpenForum Europe, IBM, Red Hat and Sun Microsystems, Inc. Second FCC Net Neutrality hearing announced

FCCThe Federal Communications Commission announced a public En Banc hearing to be held at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California on Thursday, April 17, 2008. The Commission will hear from expert panelists regarding broadband network management practices and Internet-related issues. The hearing scheduled at Stanford University is the second such hearing on broadband network management practices and Internet-related issues to be held by the FCC and follows a similar hearing held at Harvard Law School last month. Building a Safer Web: Web Tripwires and A New Browser Architecture (webcast)

Charlie ReisAs part of the Stanford EE Computer Systems Colloquium Charlie Reis of the University of Washington will today talk about the increasing practice of intermediaries messing with web content between server & client, and ways to proscribe such. He will also talk about browser security, focusing on the deficiencies of today’s web as an application platform.
