MEETUP TUESDAY: InterCommunity 2015 Global Member Meeting New York node

Next Tuesday/Wednesday July 7-8 2015 the Internet Society will be holding InterCommunity2015 – the first online meeting of our entire 70k+ global members. Session 1 on Tuesday will be optimally timed for participation in the Western Hemisphere and iComm2015 ISOC-NY will be one of several Chapters setting up “nodes” (= remote hubs) to participate. We will meet at Civic Hall starting at 2pm, and the session will run 3pm-6:30pm. After which there will be a reception. We are honoured to be joined in person by ISOC VP of Global Engagement Raúl Echeberría, who will address the global meeting via our node. Space is limited but all ISOC NY members are invited to attend. Please register via our meetup. It is also possible to individually participate remotely in the Global Meeting (including the Session 2 – 2:00am EDT on Wednesday).

MEETUP: Bitcoin for Rockstars – a fireside chat with D.A. Wallach – Sunday Jan 25

Bitcoin for RockstarsOn Sunday 25 January 2015, at 4pm the Internet Society’s New York Chapter(ISOC-NY) will present “Bitcoin for Rockstars – a fireside chat with D.A. Wallach” at TurnToTech NYC. The traditional existing methods of registering works and distributing music royalties are archaic, arcane, inefficient, and unsuited to the global networked marketplace. D.A. Wallach recently proposed thata decentralized, open, global ledger, based on bitcoin style blockchain technology, as an optimal solution for credits and rights information about music. Then a system of “smart contracts” could facilitate the distribution of funds. Thus:

In the proposed music rights network, each song, recording, rights-holder, creator, and payor would have its own unique address on the ledger. And complimenting this ledger would be “smart contracts,” programmatic rules defining how the addresses relate to each other and automating their interactions. For example, Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” would have its own address, as would Katy Perry herself, each of her collaborators, and each of the companies entitled to royalties from the song. One set of “smart contracts” could connect all of these addresses to one another.

Spotify, YouTube and other services could then issue all-in royalty micro-payments (aggregating all negotiated fees) directly to the “Dark Horse” address every time the song is played. The smart contracts connected to the “Dark Horse” address would recognize the source of the payment—say, Spotify—and then instantly split and redirect royalties to all the addresses entitled to payments from the service for the song. Katy Perry, her label, her publisher, and her collaborators would all have total visibility into payments received by the “Dark Horse” address, and each would receive its shares instantly in its own wallet. This software-based relay station for royalty and licensing payments would put creators at the center of the action, allowing them to understand how much money their works were generating, and from which services or licensees. It would also give artists and songwriters instant access to the funds generated by their work, obviating the long waiting periods they currently endure.

Call for Nominations: ISOC-NY Election 2012

isoc-nyISOC-NY is a 501(c)3 corporation, chartered by the Internet Society. Under our By-laws we have to hold an election every two years for our various offices and board of directors.

The current officers and directors terms were supposed to end on July 31 2012, and fresh terms beginning on Aug 1. However due to procrastination – July was a busy month- the election has been put off til now. But we should get it done in the next two weeks. Newly elected officers and directors terms will be backdated a month!

So, this leaves us just a matter of days to hold the 2012 election, so we’d better get on with it!!

Nominations: Aug 14 – Aug 21 2012 Midnight EST Voting: Aug 23 – Aug 29 2012 Midnight EST

According to our By-laws the offices are

1. President.
2. Executive Vice-President.
3. Administrative Vice-President.
4. Secretary
5. Assistant Secretary.
6. Treasurer.
7. Assistant Treasurer.

Only the Secretary and Treasurer are permitted to hold more than one position.

There is a minimum of 7 directors and a maximum of 15 directors.

If you look at the Community Portal you’ll see we currently have 10 directors.
The officer’s roles are clearly defined in the Bylaws. What does it mean if you become a director? Well.. it’s hoped that you will attend meetings/events, but more to the point you will be added to several mailing lists:

1) ISOC-NY BOD list, where we hash out the nitty gritty of ISOC-NY activities and policy.

2) the North American Leaders regional list, where we share thoughts with our fellow USA Chapters.

3) the Chapter Delegates list, where we share thoughts with our chapter colleagues around the world.

So, we are looking for nominations! Self-nominations are fine. Just one thing, please make sure that you are a member of the chapter! This can be done by going to https://portal.isoc.org/EBusiness/Home.aspx and checking your status. If you’re not, just join – doesn’t take a mo’!

Then send your name, with a brief statement of interest saying why you’d be a good director, to mailto:nomcom@isoc-ny.org before midnight next Tuesday Aug 21 2012. If you are also interested in standing for one of the offices say so. You will then be approved, or not, by the nominations committee.

ISOC-NY Meeting: Introduction to Paul Brigner – Tuesday 4/3

Paul BrignerOn Tuesday, April 3rd the Internet Society’s New York Chapter (ISOC-NY) will meet with new North American Regional Bureau Director of the Internet Society, Paul Brigner. Paul has worked on policy at Verizon, and is the former CTO of the Motion Picture Association of the America (MPAA), in both of which roles he has advocated positions that might not absolutely concur with the prevailing outlook at the Chapter. He is also an active member of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

This will be an opportunity to talk to Paul about his views, ways in which the global organization can build better working relationships with its Chapters, and means of furthering ISOC’s mission of promoting an Open Internet.

ISOC-NY Event: Cyrus Farivar – The Internet of Elsewhere 5/4

Cyrus FarivarOn May 4 2011 the Internet Society’s New York Chapter (ISOC-NY) will present broadcaster, author & journalist Cyrus Farivar reading and discussing his imminent (May 8 ) book ‘The Internet of Elsewhere‘ (Rutgers University Press). All welcome. There will be a live webcast.

In the book Farivar explores the Internet’s history and effects in four distinct and, to some, surprising societies — Iran, Estonia, South Korea, and Senegal. He profiles Web pioneers in these countries and, at the same time, surveys the environments in which they each work. After all, contends Farivar, despite California’s great success in creating the Internet and spawning companies like Apple and Google, in some areas the United States is still years behind other nations.

Audio/video – ISOC-NY EVENT: dot nyc – How are we doing? May 8 @ NYU

Last October the NYC Department of Information Technology & Telecommunications (DoITT) issued a request for proposals for “services to obtain, manage, administer, maintain and market the geographic Top Domain name .nyc.”. At ICANN’s recent 37th meeting in Nairobi, consensus was reached on the “overarching” issue of intellectual property protection. This leaves only the issue of the final (4th) draft of the Applicants Guidebook, expected before the 38th meeting in Brussels in June 2010, before the much delayed new generic top level domain (gTLD) delegation process can finally grind into action. (One caveat – a policy forbidding cross-ownership of registries and registrars is still not totally set in stone.)

The Internet Society – New York Chapter (ISOC-NY) has for some years been following the .nyc and ICANN process on behalf of the NYC community and, on May 8 2010, hosted a seminar “dot nyc – How are we doing?” at NYU. NYC Council Member Gale Brewer delivered keynote remarks, then vendor Eric Brunner-Williams of CORE Internet Council of Registrars revealed details of their proposal to the City, and Antony Van Couvering of Minds + Machines and Public Advocate Beill DeBlasio’s earlier comments to the City Council were shown in video. There was a discussion “What’s it for?” about possible applications – civic, community, commercial, and “outside the box” – for a local top level domain. Speakers included Tom Lowenhaupt of Connecting .nyc and Richard Knipel of Wikimedia NYC.

ISOC-NY Event: Censorship Circumvention via Kaleidoscope – NYU 3/25

On Thurs. Mar 25 ISOC-NY hosted Prof. Jinyang Li in a talk about the use of distributed systems, and particularly the use of the Kaleidoscope Firefox plug-in, in circumventing censorship. This is part of her ongoing research into “exploiting the real world social relationships among users to improve the security and reliability of open distributed systems.” The talk explains how traditional censorship workarounds like proxies and P2P can easily be discovered and defeated, but how Kaleidoscope – which passes encrypted data through trusted relays – defies such efforts.

ISOC-NY Poll – Do you support Net Neutrality?

There have been two recent NYC events that have pitched supporters and opponents of Net Neutrality against each other – the TechDebate and the NYC Council Public Hearing. The FCC has mooted its six principles of net neutrality And Rep. Ed Markey has introduced the new bill H.R. 3458 aka the ‘Internet Freedom Preservation Act of 2009′ in Congress. For their part, Republicans have come up with two opposing bills. As noted in the Council hearing the Internet Society’s stance on this matter is somewhat neutral, suggesting that regulators concentrate on optimizing user choice.
