As it did in 2012, on Tuesday March 12 2013 the Internet Society’s Greater Washington Chapter (ISOC-DC) will again host this year’s Internet Freedom Fellows in a follow up event to their induction in Geneva. The Fellows will have an opportunity to discuss their experiences advocating for basic human rights and the role of the Internet in formulating their success. The event will be webcast live by the Internet Society’s North America Bureau.

On Wednesday February 6 2013 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) held a Workshop on Network Resiliency at Brooklyn Law School. Organized by Henning Schulzrinne, the FCC’s Chief Technical Officer, the workshop focused on the lessons learned from both 9-11 and Superstorm Sandy. It was a full day event. The venue, Brooklyn Law’s Forchelli Center, afforded sweeping views of New York Harbor, which brought an added piquancy to the proceeding.  The event was webcast via the Internet Society Chapters Webcasting Channel with real-time captioning.

IGF-USA Post-WCIT Roundtable Discussion at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington DC on December 21 2012.
The Roundtable participants were from the IGF-USA Steering Group who attended the ITU World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) in Dubai including Ambassador Phil Verveer, US State Department, and representatives of the civil society; business, and technical communities, and was open to the public – either in person or via phone bridge. This event focused on implications for Internet Governance (IG) and how to advance the effectiveness of the IGF and the IGF-USA in addressing key issues highlighted during the WCIT, but which are clearly in the IG space.

Today Wednesday December 19 2012 the Internet Society’s newly formed Kenya Chapter (ISOC KE) is holding its launch event – the 1st Annual Internet Forum in Nairobi. The forum’s dual theme is “Celebrating 20 Years of The Internet Society Globally – The Status and Future of The Internet in Kenyaâ€. On Friday October 12 there was an Internet Society North America Bureau Member Hangout featuring Marci Harris, CEO, and Rachna Choudhry, co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer, of POPVOX.  Marci and Rachna described how POPVOX can be leveraged to learn about, track and influence the development of legislation with a focus on bills that have an impact on the Internet.

The ICANN Non-Commercial Users Constituency (NCUC) (of which ISOC-NY is a member) is holding an all-day policy conference “ICANN & Internet Governance: Security & Freedom in a Connected World”  in Toronto on Friday, 12 October 2012 –  the eve of ICANN #45 .The conference will  explore key ICANN and Internet governance policy issues. It will discuss the promotion of cyber-security and human rights on the Internet, multi-stakeholderism and the role of governments, and key policy issues surrounding new top-level domains such as freedom of expression and intellectual property rights.  The conference’s subtitle recognizes society’s shared twin goals of security and freedom, and questions to what extent must society sacrifice one for the other. Remote participation will be available via Adobe Connect and there will also be a live webcast via the Internet Society Chapters Webcasting Channel. Toronto time is the same as NYC (=UTC-4)
Today October 8 2012 the Internet Society (ISOC) will host INET Curaçao. Curaçao is in the Antilles – Caribbean islands just off the coast of Venezuela. This is a full day conference that will cover many aspects of the Internet including policy, security, and development. On Tuesday October 9 2012, a follow up IPv6 Launch Day event will fully explore the road forward with regard to addressing. Both events will be webcast live on the Internet Society Chapters Channel. On Monday September 24 2012 the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information (CITI) hosted State of Telecom 2012 at Columbus Business School NYC. Peering is the foundation of the global Internet. Its details are often arcane and ad hoc. One of the major efforts of the Internet Society is to promote the establishment of new Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), especially in developing countries. The F2C:Freedom to Connect Conference is taking place in Washington DC today and tomorrow May 21-22 2012. Speakers include Vint Cerf, Rebecca Mackinnon, Cory Doctorow, Sascha Meinrath, Susan Crawford, and Eben Moglen.
F2C: Freedom to Connect, inaugurated in 2005, is a conference devoted to preserving and celebrating the essential properties of the Internet. The phrase Freedom to Connect is now official US foreign policy, thanks to Secretary of State Clinton, who said in 2010 “the idea that governments should not prevent people from connecting to the internet, to websites, or to each other. The freedom to connect is like the freedom of assembly, only in cyberspace.â€

On Thursday May 17 2012 the Internet Society Webcasting Channel will stream live the Internet Society Hong Kong Chapter (ISOC-HK) event “Building Trust in Cloud Computing” Summit 2012, which will inaugurate the Cloud Security Alliance – Hong Kong & Macau Chapter. It will be one of the most prominent cloud security events ever in Southern China, and features notable speakers from the CSA, NIST, Intel, and the Hong Kong Government. Since Hong Kong is 12 hours ahead of NYC, the webcast will kick off at 9.30pm EDT on Wednesday for NYC viewers.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of it’s founding, on April 22-24 2012 the Internet Society is holding a Global INET in Geneva Switzerland. The theme is “Meeting at the Crossroads, Imagining the Future Internet“. The Internet Society is using the occasion to launch an Internet Hall of Fame. Webcast and remote participation will be available on April 23 and 24. There will be separate text transcriptions, see the agenda for links to the individual sessions.
