  Webcast: LAC.IGF underway in Trinidad #igf #lacigf – @InternetSociety presentation tomorrow 

  The Latin American and Caribbean Convention on Internet Governance is underway in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The conference comprise two parts, on Monday 8 August the 7th Caribbean Internet Governance Forum, and on 9-11 August  the 4th Latin American & Caribbean Preparatory Meeting for the Internet Governance Forum, (The IGF will be held in Nairobi on 27-30 September 2011).

  Webcast: #IGF-USA in DC today monday #ICANN #internet #governance 

  The third IGF-USA will take place today Monday, July 18, 2011 at the Georgetown Law Center, in Washington, DC. The one-day event will include expert panels and workshops on important Internet governance issues and serve as a prelude to the global United Nations-facilitated Internet Governance Forum in Nairobi in September.

  Internet Society issues #eG8 press release – emphasizes multistakeholder approach @InternetSociety 

  The Internet Society has issued a press release in advance of the eg8 Forum in Paris. The release, issued in conjunction with the Number Resource Organization, the Internet Society France Chapter, ICANN, and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) calls on world leaders and governments to recognize the multistakeholder approach that has built the Internet, and to honor their commitment at the WSIS Summit in Tunis in 2005 to continue that process.

  The release states:

  A multistakeholder approach has helped to encourage the global Internet’s tremendous growth and is key to its continued development as a platform for innovation and economic progress in the developed and developing world. Without the full involvement of the organizations charged with the development, management and operation of the Internet, the future stability, growth and development of the Internet could be compromised. The same approach has proven to be the most effective when it comes to Internet policy development. Organizations representing civil society can also provide crucial guidance about to ensure the Internet supports social progress.

  The ‘Internet Ecosystem’ of organizations and communities that guide the operation and development of the technologies and infrastructure that comprise the global Internet are currently leading the way on the deployment of technologies that will ensure the Internet continues to be a platform for innovation, economic development and social progress.

  Milton Mueller: Networks and States: The Global Politics of Internet Governance – NYU 12/14 

  ISOC-NY is delighted to present Milton Mueller’s first full exposition of his new  book  Networks and States: The Global Politics of Internet Governance at NYU on Tuesday December 14 2010.  Prof. Mueller is a co-founder of ICANN’s NonCommercial User’s Constituency and a renowned cyberlibertarian.  His 2002 book Ruling the Root has long been the definitive work on governance.  We are excited to hear details of what, in his mind,  has changed in the last 8 years.  This event is open to the public and will be webcast live.

  Google, China, and the future of freedom on the global Internet 

  Rebecca Mack writes:

  In any place where governance and rule-making happens – whether through software code or written laws enforced by police – inhabitants have a choice. We can be subjects who submit to governance without consent, or we can be citizens who grant and withhold consent – and who are ultimately responsible for whether the government we’ve consented to fosters an open, free and just society or not. We need to stop thinking of ourselves as mere users of a service and start thinking of ourselves of inhabitants of a place called the Internet. We are Netizens. Time to get more proactive about shaping the Internet’s future – and pushing its most powerful players in the direction we want them to go.

  Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft have taken a first step toward recognizing that they are fallible and require greater ethical oversight than shareholders, boards of directors, and markets alone can provide. Last year they helped launch the Global Network Initiative, a multistakeholder effort together with human rights groups, socially responsible investors, and academics, in which they’ve pledged to uphold basic principles on free expression and privacy, committed to independent evaluations, and agreed to public accountability mechanisms. (Disclosure: I am a founding member and on the GNI board.) It’s hard to know at this point whether the GNI will succeed – it’s still very much an early-stage experiment. But it’s at least a recognition that new forms of public oversight, transparency and accountability are required to make sure that the companies who hold so much power over so many people’s lives do not abuse this power. It’s an early attempt to figure out what shape those mechanisms need to take.
