KeyWifi begins rollout in NYC #nyc #wi-fi
KeyWifi has announced it is alpha-testing its service in NYC.
KeyWifi, similar to FON, is a scheme whereby subscribers can get paid for letting others access their Wi-Fi routers. Unlike FON, which involves purchasing an extra router, KeyWifi merely gives ‘suppliers’ an encryption key, which it then rents out to ‘users’ – a small number of the supplier’s neighbors. Users pay $9.89/mo to rent several keys. Suppliers get 2/3 of the resulting revenue.
In a promotional video CEO Adam Black glosses over problems with ISP’s terms of service, saying “We are talking to them”.
