ISOC-NY Public Forum – Connecting .nyc – May 21

dot nyc logoISOC-NY will host a public forum this coming Wednesday on the topic ‘Connecting.nyc’. Tom Lowenhaupt will give a briefing on the longstanding campaign to bring about a .nyc top-level domain which finally, with Paris and Berlin also on similar paths, looks to be a practical reality.

This is an important and vital issue for New York City’s global identity. As Tom goes off to make his case at the ICANN meet in Paris next month let’s show him that he has the people’s support!

The return of the Silicon Alley Reporter

Silicon Alley ReporterVeterans on the NYC tech scene will remember Silicon Alley Reporter, Jason Calcanis’ print publication that went from DIY to a successful glossy in the 90’s before being snapped up by Dow Jones, who then went on to, as is too often the case in such circumstances, kill it off.

Now the name has been revived by young enterpriser Gary Sharma, who discovered the trademark was defunct. He’s turned it into an online calendar of city tech-related events that is bound to be a welcome and valuable addition to many bookmark lists. Continue reading

Prof. Zittrain’s bookThis Friday April 11 2008 Professor Jonathan Zittrain of the Oxford Internet Institute will be previewing his book “The Future of the Internet — And How to Stop It” in NYC. The event, which is in the form of a discussion, is presented by the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School, Jeffrey Cunard and Bruce Keller, partners at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, & Big Think. Susan Crawford, Visiting Professor at Yale Law School, will join the discussion. Yale University Press are the publishers of the book.

Universal Broadband Grants for New York announced

New York State Council for Universal BroadbandMar 19: New York Governor David A. Paterson announced that nine public/private sector partnerships will be the first recipients of grants from the New York State Council for Universal Broadband. The funds are targeted to help promote the research, design and implementation of innovative solutions to create affordable broadband Internet access for underserved urban and rural communities throughout the state.

Amongst the recipients were an initiative to bring broadband over power lines (BPL) to Onondaga County and a program to bring a year’s free access to residents of the Mount Hope community housing project in the Bronx. Continue reading

NYCBAC Queens public hearing audio

NYC sealThe New York Broadband Advisory Committee held its fourth Public Hearing on Monday Mar 3rd 2008 at LaGuardia Community College in Queens. ISOC-NY videotaped the meeting and the audio has been posted on the ISOC-NY wiki.

The hearing was attended by Senator Larry Pressler – author of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 that, amongst other things, established the E-Rate system. Continue reading

The TAMMI – a new non-profit tech/culture incubator in The Bronx

TAMMIThe purpose of the Technology, Art, Movie and Micro-Business Incubator, Inc (the “TAMMI”) is to promote arts, culture, science, and technology in furtherance of social and economic development in the South Bronx and other economically disadvantaged areas of New York City. The TAMMI seeks to nurture creativity and innovation, stimulate creative enterprises, and celebrate the diverse heritage of New York City. The TAMMI intends to accomplish its purpose through education, training, and mentoring, providing resources, technical assistance, and strategic advice, and promoting events and programs to develop local opportunities and increase community awareness about issues relating to entrepreneurial pathways and opportunities in the creative technology industry.
