ISOC Chapters discuss IPv6 transition
On September 22 2009 ISOC Chapters held an E-meeting to discuss two new briefings on IPv6 deployment.
Amongst the conclusions were that, for competitive advantage and business continuity, stakeholders – rather than sitting on their hands waiting for a ‘killer app’ or an IPv4 ‘crisis’ – need to institute a robust policy of factoring IPv6 deployment into network ‘refresh’ cycles. Chapters can help by raising awareness. Governments, in particular, can be prevailed upon to assist the process by leading by example. Addressing is as important as broadband, both are important enablers of innovation and growth.

Three gentlemen with three computers and three projectors take the audience on a fast-paced and whirlwind tour of every major internet meme, famous piece of internet media and more YouTube footage that we care to admit over the course of one and one half of one hour. Biologist Richard Dawkins defines as meme as a unit of cultural transmission – in the general sense a meme can be any piece of information which travels between members of culture – for us, however, memes involve funny pictures of cats and people doing silly dances.

E-waste Recycling Day – Sep 12 2009
The Ecology Center and Tekserve are partnering to recycle electronic waste (“e-waste”) from New York City residents. Bring your unwanted or broken electronics to the collection event in front of Tekserve to have them recycled responsibly. A list of acceptable materials can be found here. They do not accept home appliances such as microwaves or refrigerators or any electronics from businesses.

Of $7.2 billion allotted to broadband under the ARRA approximately $2.4 billion from RUS and up to $1.6 billion from NTIA is available in this first grant round.

Video of NYC BTOP meeting
With the deadline for applications for the first round of grants from the $7.2bn set aside for broadband adoption projects in President Obama’s stimulus plan rapidly approaching (Aug14), members of many of NYC communities met to discuss how best to achieve results. Representatives of the City’s Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DOITT) poured cold water on many aspirations stating that most, if not all, the cash would go to rural projects. Despite this many declared it their intention to apply.
