ITOJUN IPv6 SERVICE AWARD LAUNCHED

Dr. Jun-ichiro "Itojun" Hagino

Tokyo, Japan; Reston, VA; and Geneva, Switzerland – 25 November 2008 – A new award, providing recognition and support for those progressing IPv6 development on the Internet, was announced today, following last week’s 73rd meeting of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

The “Itojun Service Award” honours the memory of Dr. Jun-ichiro “Itojun” Hagino, who passed away in 2007, aged just 37. The award, established by the friends of Itojun and administered by the Internet Society (ISOC), recognises and commemorates the extraordinary dedication exercised by Itojun over the course of IPv6 development.

A Rough Guide to ISOC’s IETF73 Hot Topics

Internet Engineering Task ForceISOC’s Standards & Technology department offers the following “rough guide” to hot topics being discussed at the 73rd IETF meeting in Minneapolis
(November 16-21, 2008). This simply indicates which meeting sessions are
particularly focused on the following topics:

  • Bandwidth Management
  • IPv4/IPv6 Coexistence
  • DNSSEC
  • Trust and Identity

Remote participation in all meetings will be possible — see specific
meetings listed on http://tools.ietf.org/agenda/73/ for access to audio stream and jabber rooms. That page also includes links to helpful tarballs of documents being discussed at meetings, etc.

ISOC New Delhi minutes posted

ISOC logo The Internet Society has posted the minutes from two meetings held during the recent ICANN event in New Delhi. At the first, the theme was ISOC involvement in ICANN. Topics included chapter involvement in constituencies, the midterm JPA review, and a possible At-Large summit in Paris.. At the second, chapters discussed ISOC’s membership structure and their involvement with OneWebDay, the IGF, and the proposed Internet Bill of Rights. Continue reading →

NDSS 2008 underway in San Diego

The NDSS, supported by the Internet Society, now in its 15th year, is one of the longest-running Internet security conferences on the calendar, drawing leading experts, researchers, and technologists from around the globe to share experience and analysis of security issues in networks and distributed systems. ISOC position on the ICANN Joint Project

ISOC logoAs noted earlier, The Joint Project Agreement (JPA) between the United States government and ICANN will have a mid-term review in March. As part of this review, the US government put out a Notice of Inquiry asking for comments on the continued transition to the private sector.

ISOC has issued a draft statement that recommends, contrary to ICANN’s desire to complete the process forthwith, that the agreement be allowed to run its full course. Continue reading →

ISOC Initiatives 2008-2010

ISOC logoAt the December 2007 Board of Trustees meeting held in Vancouver, ISOC presented plans for 2008 to 2010. Key to those plans were a series of new, longer term, more strategic activities which will replace the traditional ‘pillar’ model describing activities in Standards, Public Policy, and Education. Not deploying IPv6 threatens Internet, Lynn St. Amour warns

VANCOUVER, B.C. — The Internet has 1.3 billion users, but that’s not enough for Lynn St. Amour. As CEO of the Internet Society, she is expanding the nonprofit group, which promotes development of the Internet globally. St. Amour doubled the group’s staff in 2007 and beefed up its outreach activities in Africa, South America and Asia in her bid to add another billion Internet users worldwide. National Correspondent Carolyn Duffy Marsan sat down with St. Amour this week at a meeting of the Internet Engineering Task Force, an ISOC-funded standards group.
