At the recent Internet Governance Forum in Vilnius two workshop sessions were held to discuss Core Internet Values.

David Solomonoff, President of the Internet Society of New York (ISOC-NY) gave a talk at the August 2010 monthly meeting of the Manhattan Libertarian Party. David’s theme was ‘Taking Back the Edge: Freedom and the Internet Model’. The meeting took place in the back room of the Ukrainian East Village Restaurant (famous in alternative music circles as the site of a legendary New Order show in November 1981). David spoke about the importance of maintaining the end-to-end principle and the open internet, threatened today by repressive political forces and monopolistic interests. There was some lively discussion with the libertarians about whether regulation was preferable to unwelcome consolidation. David emphasized the bottom-up standards making process that has stood the test of time.

Friday July 30 will be the occasion of the hackNY program Demo Fest, held at the Courant Institute at NYU. Sponsored by ISOC-NY with funds provided by the Kauffman Foundation, hackNY organizes the summer hackNY Fellows program, in which selected student fellows are matched with NYC startups, and provided with shared housing in NYU dorms, plus lectures from local tech leaders. We are looking forward to seeing the results of their efforts. Video will be shot and webcast at a later date.

ISOC-NY  held a  meeting with Hunter Newby, CEO of Allied Fiber, on Jun 28 2010. This was an interesting and wide ranging roundtable discussion on AF’s plans to encircle the entire USA with a dark fiber ring with carrier neutral access at any point.
As the meeting was held at short notice, regrettably our two associates with the greatest expertise in such matters Frank Coluccio and NYC Community Fiber’s Lou Klepner were not able to be present.  Also, it was decided, rather than attempt a coherent edit of 2+ hours of audio, to videotape a follow-up meeting commencing with a more formal presentation, and both  Frank and Lou in attendance.
This meeting  took place on Weds 14 July 2010 at NYU. Video is now posted on the ISOC-NY site
On Monday Jun 28 2010 a small group of ISOC-NY members met with Hunter Newby, founder of Allied Fiber, to discuss the company’s plans to encircle the entire USAÂ with a dark fiber ring with carrier neutral access at any point . It was a very stimulating talk lasting over 2 hours.

The Feb 2010 NY Tech meetup varied from the usual format, of a few startup presentations, to having a wide number of presenters, including luminaries such as Clay Shirky, and new NYTM chair Andrew Rasiej, speak on their view of how things will/should/could proceed in the forthcoming decade.

The Open Video Alliance is teaming up with the Harvard Berkman Center to deliver a global webcast of a talk by Lawrence Lessig. It’s happening February 25th from 6:00 to 7:30 EST, live from Cambridge, MA. OVA has arranged screening events around the world. The hometown premiere event in New York will feature a live DJ, video mashup presentations, free food and tons of guests.

This is a talk about copyright in a digital age, and the role (and importance) of a doctrine like “fair use.†Fair use allows limited use of copyrighted material without requiring permission from the rights holders, and is essential for commentary, criticism, news reporting, remix, research, teaching and scholarship with video. As a medium, online video will be most powerful when it is fluid, like a conversation. Like the rest of the internet, online video must be designed to encourage creative expression and political participation, not just passive consumption.
The lecture will last 45 minutes and will be followed by an interactive Q & A. The event will be moderated by Elizabeth Stark of the Open Video Alliance. Questions can be submitted using the hashtag #wireside.
