The dotNeighborhoods Initiative – Meeting #4 – Tue 3/23

Announcing an important meeting in support of a public interest .nyc TLD.

This is the fourth meeting of our dotNeighborhoods Initiative and our aim is to adopt a resolution leading to the formation of an independent “Trust for dotNeighborhoods” to oversee the development of neighborhood names as civic resources, to assure, for example, that Corona.nyc serves the needs of Corona residents and not the beer company.


We’re all familiar with Top Level Domains like .com, .org, .edu, and .gov. New York City will soon have its own, the .nyc Top Level Domain, or TLD.

Beginning as early as 2011 there will be websites like GreenwichVillage.nyc, BayRidge.nyc, JacksonHeights.nyc, Harlem.nyc, Astoria.nyc, Chelsea.nyc, Melrose.nyc, and sites serving 300 other neighborhoods. These domain names will provide places where neighbors can connect with one another to address problems and explore opportunities.

With the arrival of these “dotNeighborhoods,” traditional neighborhood names will take on more meaning than reputation and how much housing costs.
