ISOC-NY EVENT: Building tomorrow’s broadband – Nov 17 2010 #nyc #broadband #fiber

isoc-nyDiscussion of Net Neutrality has often involved policy discussions about regulating or rationing bandwidth as a scarce resource.

On Wednesday, November 17th, ISOC-NY will host a panel with people who are building tomorrow’s broadband infrastructure to create an abundance of bandwidth that could one day make these issues moot.

Topics will include:

  • What is the best technical solution for bridging the broadband gap? What impact will white spaces have?
  • What is the best combination of public and private investment in infrastructure?
  • How does the need for increased capacity impact the debate on Net Neutrality?

Panelists:

  • Hunter Newby, CEO of Allied Fiber, a company that is now building a coast to coast dark fiber network. Prior to founding Allied Fiber, Mr. Newby was Chief Strategy Officer of the Telx Group, Inc., one of the leading carrier hotel interconnection facility operators in the U.S. Telx was founded in 2000 to address the need for a neutral environment for colocation and interconnection for all network operators. Mr. Newby is well known in the Carrier Hotel Interconnection business and is also a recognized authority on Ethernet transport and Voice Peering. He has been involved with various industry Councils and Associations including the Pacific Telecommunications Council (Vice Chairman of PTC Advisory Council), VON (Advisory Board Member) and the International Engineering Consortium.
  • Joe Calzone of the ION Upstate New York Rural Broadband Initiative. ION has received a federal broadband stimulus grant of $39.7 million to augment its existing 2200 mile fiber network with 1,300 miles of additional fiber-optic middle-mile broadband network in underserved areas of upstate NY, Pennsylvania and Vermont.
  • Louis Houle of Connect Quebec, a Canadian rural broadband initiative, will participate remotely .
