Two-Year study of Global Internet Traffic

arbor networksArbor Networks, the University of Michigan and Merit Network today announced that they will be presenting the Internet Observatory Report‘ at NANOG47 in Dearborn, MI on October 19.  The report is believed to be the largest study of global Internet traffic ever and was carried out over 2 years.

Key findings are:

  • Traffic has migrated away from Tier 1 providers as large content providers build their own networks.
  • 30 ‘giants’  now account for 30% of all traffic.
  • As applications, including video, migrate online their number has reduced dramatically, as has downloading including P2P.
  • Net Economics are undergoing a dramatic shift, with major transit providers using content plays and other strategies to stay profitable.
