ICANN Fellowships for Paris 2008 – call for applications

icannThe Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is putting out the call for fellowship program applications for its 32nd International Public Meeting to be held in Paris from 22-27 June 2008.

There are not 13 root servers

I am at the UN Internet Governance Forum, being held this week in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A recurring theme you can hear here is one that has vexed the technical community many times before — “Why are there 13 root servers?” This question is usually followed by questions like “Why are most of the root servers in the US?”

So let’s dispel these myths.

IGF: George Sadowsky reports

Having just returned from the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Rio, I must say that the contents of Jack Chang’s article do not adequately characterize the event or the audience.

There were 1300 people who showed up, from 109 countries. Many of the were governmental and NGO representatives. The IGF is not a planning body, as Chang asserts, but a forum for discussion, and it must stay that way. It was set up as a compromise result of the WSIS (World Summit on the Information Society) conferences in Geneva in 2003 and Tunis in 2005. The negotiations over the summit statement and the terms of reference of the IGF were not the friendliest. Continue reading

ICANN Chair Opens Doors to Participation

RIO DE JANEIRO: ICANN chairman Peter Dengate Thrush took the opportunity of the last day of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Rio to urge everyone at the conference to get involved and participate in ICANN.

“Whoever you are, wherever you are, if you are interested in finding out more about ICANN, or its work, the door is open,” Dengate Thrush said. “Please walk in.” Continue reading
