It is anticipated that the IPv4 address space currently used by the majority of Internet devices will shortly be exhausted. The IETF has decided to replace the 32-bit addressing scheme in IPv4 with a 128-bit addressing scheme in IPv6. Thus far the change-over has been slow, but time is running out.
