When the Internet's designers planned its domain name system, they allocated .com for commercial enterprises, .edu for schools, .org for not-for-profits, .net for networks, .gov for government, .mil for the military, and 200+ names like .uk, .ru, .de, and .us for nation-states. But they didn't provide such top level domain names (commonly called TLDs) for cities.

In 2009 the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) plans to fill this lacuna by issuing city TLDs for the first time. The Connecting.nyc presentation will describe the origin of a grassroots New York City effort to acquire the .nyc TLD and how it plans to be at the front of the line for city TLDs alongside .paris and .berlin.
