    #NYPD to monitor #facebook, #twitter, #myspace

NYPDA Daily News story reports the the New York Police Department has formed a ‘Social Media Unit’ to monitor popular services like facebook, myspace, and twitter for crime-related posts. From the story:

Newly named Assistant Commissioner Kevin O’Connor … has been put in charge of the new juvenile justice unit. He and his staff will mine social media, looking for info about troublesome house parties, gang showdowns and other potential mayhem, sources said.

O’Connor’s new unit will operate under the Community Affairs Bureau; it will also handle outreach programs, with its mandate going beyond the Net.

Still, the 23-year veteran is known for his success in online policing, including stings to catch predator pervs looking for sex with underage victims.

And he was credited in his former assignment with a Manhattan North gang unit for providing critical information in a number of shooting cases gleaned from online boasting. O’Connor, who could not be reached for comment, was promoted to his new position from lieutenant – a highly unusual stepup in rank.

Facebook granted patent on GPS based checkins #patent

Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch reports that Facebook has just been granted a wide-ranging patent on location-based social networking. He writes:

The patent appears to be pretty broad. It covers a “method of sharing locations of users participating in a social networking service at a geographic location.” The location is determined using a “GPS identifier” and it combines a status update with the member’s current location. It also seems to cover what are now known as checkins:

the status information manually provided by the first user on an input module of the mobile device; associating the location information with the status information of the first user in a database; and sending the status information and the location information of the first user to a second user for display.

In other words, Facebook might just have been granted a patent to Foursquare’s (and Gowalla’s) main feature.

Mark Zuckerberg donated to diaspora project

In a Wired interview, facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg says that he supports the diaspora project to make an open source facebook alternative, and even donated money.

I think it is cool people are trying to do it. I see a little of myself in them. It’s just their approach that the world could be better and saying, “We should try to do it.”
